The reinforced neck is a 34-inch scale, three-piece laminate of rock maple with a custom composite black basswood two octave fingerboard and a flame maple headstock veneer matching the body. The instrument is finished in stunning high-gloss natural or transparent color and a satin neck. The hardware is black chrome, and the bridge is a unique custom carbon/graphite monolith, an individual assembly for each string which also integrates the transducer system. The Saber Bass is a lightweight, comfortable design that is familiar in feel, revolutionary in concept, and inspiring to play. Great sounding, technologically fascinating.

When I first learned of lightwave, I was very intrigued by the technology behind their optical pickup system. I finally ordered a VL-4, and my impressions are as follows:
* The bass arrived set up perfectly, with low action. It was plug and play right out of the box.
* The fit and finish is superb. A nice flame top with transparent red paint, and a matching headstock. The bass is very light in weight, right at 7lbs.
* The bass sounds great, with an amazing amount of tonal options. The location and arrangement of the knobs are intuitive, and the bass functions perfectly. The bass plays like a dream and there are no dead spots whatsoever on the neck.
* I had a minor issue with the bass, and Lightwave customer service was superb. Their response time was very fast, and they resolved the problem quickly.
